This past August, my younger sister was visiting from out of town, and on a whim, I signed us up for a mud run. This was a new experience for the both of us, but it turned out to be the best part of her visit. 🙂
What is a mud run?! Basically an obstacle course filled with water and mud. You climb over barrels, scale walls, swim through troughs, army crawl through muddy paths, jog through fields, and get really, really dirty in the process. But the best part? You have fun. So much fun. (And a workout, which is obviously pretty sweet!)
A mud run is crazy, exhilarating, challenging, exhausting, messy, and so much fun. Here’s 7 reasons why you definitely need to add one to your bucket list:
1. It’s something you’ve never experienced before.
And new is good. You probably haven’t decided, on a regular Saturday, to shrug on your crappy clothes and gym shoes and run through mud. But now you can. Now you can get shamelessly dirty with friends and family, share laughs, and get a workout. There really isn’t anything better.
2. Anyone can do it.
You will see people of all ages, body types, and activity levels at a mud run. This isn’t a typical ‘race.’ There’s not a list of requirements you’re supposed to meet, or a time you have to have. It’s meant to be challenging, but it’s meant to be for anyone and everyone, which means if there’s something you really can’t do, you’re not going to be forced to do it. The challenge is on you, so you make the rules. That way you aren’t restricted from participating and having fun if there’s a physical impairment you’re facing.
But no matter how ‘fit’ our ‘in shape’ you are, the mud run is something you can and feel confident doing.
3. You’ll have so much fun. Seriously.
Half the fun of doing a mud run is the people you do it with, so surround yourself with family and friends.
You will crack up at how dirty you’re getting, how hard certain obstacles are, and how soaked you are with water during the swimming trough. You will smile and you will enjoy yourself. Guaranteed.
4. It’s actually an awesome workout.
So not only are you going to have a great time, but it’s going to be productive. You’ll actually burn calories, work your muscles, and more likely than not, be sore afterwards! There will be times when you jog, run, jump over hurdles, climb a wall, swing on monkey bars, and pull yourself up with your arms–these are meant to be challenging, and challenging is good!
5. You will be pushed outside of your comfort zone.
This goes along with #5: you will be challenged. This is a good thing. Trying something new is often scary, but this run isn’t going to leave you with anything other than a smile (and some soreness). Don’t be afraid.
6. You will get messy. And this is good.
How many times in your life can you get messy? I mean super, head-to-toe-in-mud, soaked shoes, dirty shirt, mud-on-your-face dirty? Not many times. So take advantage! (And take pics!) You get to flashback to childhood and put war paint on your face, throw mud at each other, and let yourself be a mess.
7. It’s a great bonding experience.
Whoever you participate in the mud run with, whether a significant other, group of friends, or family member–your’e guaranteed to become closer.
Whether this is through waiting for one another to finish an obstacle, complaining about sore muscles together, pushing one another, or painting each other with mud, you’re going to finish the race with a new sense of closeness and a bunch of awesome memories.
