Sometimes You Need a Lazy Day

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having one of those days where you completely relax. And I mean relax—your only physical activity is walking from your bed to the couch, from the couch to the fridge for some snacks, back to the couch, then back to your bed.

We’re always so hyped on physical activity. Get moving! Just do it! Challenge yourself! Be fit! Get active! Yes. Yes. Yes. Those are all wonderful things, and there are so many benefits–physically, emotionally, mentally, socially–to being an active person. But we all need a break once in a while. And spending a full twenty-four hours at home, curled up on the couch or your bed with a fortress of pillows and a fuzzy blanket is just as necessary to being a healthy, happy person.

This is me, right now. In this exact moment, curled up with my fuzzy grey blanket and my super warm green one. And a three-sizes too big sweatshirt. And some pillows. On a soft couch. I’m in heaven.

I fell asleep early last night, before midnight. And didn’t wake up until 12:30. After I woke up, I laid in bed, read poems and short stories for thirtyish minutes. Then fell back asleep until 3. Then I wandered to the kitchen, made a smoothie and waffle and curled up on the couch. I binge-watched Finding Carter (it’s a great MTV show on Hulu…I totally recommend it) and I blogged while listening to relaxing music: James Vincent McMorrow Radio on Pandora (again, another recommendation for if you’re ever wanting to relax and hear some beautiful voices and instruments). And now it’s 7:30PM. And I’m still here. Happy. Content. Relaxed.

I needed a break. I didn’t sleep much this week, had a huge presentation for my student teaching, woke up at 5:08 every morning to get to work, and spent the rest of my days with kids and at the library. I was pooped.

But after spending the last six or so hours sprawled on the couch in everything from a baggy sweatshirt and sweatpants to fuzzy socks, I realized how much I needed a total brain and body break. There’s plenty of time in life to get active, to go for a run, to workout, to be smart and on your ‘A game,’ and for for me, today wasn’t it.

It’s okay to give your body a break and totally relax once in a while.

Just don’t get in the habit of it. Try to give yourself a night, a day, a weekend, to just refresh. Spend quiet time with yourself. Don’t work on work stuff. Do something calming, something fun, something you never seem to have time for. Not only will it physically re-energize you, but it will make you happy. And happiness is good.
