According to research, 8 out of 10 American adults think dental health benefits are vital, but only about 64% enjoy them! This statistic is quite concerning, as many experts consider the mouth a window to general health. In fact, numerous studies have proven that dental diseases are linked to cardiovascular illnesses, diabetes, and other ailments… but, you can combat the negatives with proper dental care!

Here are a few easy ways to stay on top of your dental health.

1. Floss

Flossing helps you eliminate food particles in areas where your toothbrush and mouthwash can’t effectively clean. However, it is estimated that nearly one-third of Americans never floss! This is worrisome, considering how essential flossing is to oral health.

Dentists agree that you don’t have to wait for pieces of food to get stuck between your teeth before flossing. You can include it in your oral health routine to stimulate the gums, lower plaque, and reduce inflammation in the area.

2. Visit the Dentist Twice Each Year

A survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that about 48% of insured Americans have avoided dental visits or suggested procedures due to cost. However, even the most dutiful brushers need to visit the dentist twice yearly to stay on top of their dental health.

Your dentist will search for cavities and remove any calculus that builds up below and above your gum line. Additionally, they may spot potential issues and provide treatment solutions such as dental implants if necessary.

3. Brush Properly

There is a right and wrong way to brush your teeth, and doing a poor job of it is almost as harmful as not brushing at all! The most important thing is to take your time when brushing your teeth by gently moving your toothbrush in circular motions to dislodge plaque.

However, restrict all brushing sessions to no longer than 4 minutes to prevent enamel damage. You’ll also want to brush your tongue, too, since a lot of filth and plaque can build on it as well. This filth can harm your teeth and cause bad breath if left unchecked, so be sure to clean your tongue after every brushing session.

4. Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash as necessary for optimum oral health, but some people avoid it because they don’t like the taste or don’t think it’s necessary. However, mouthwash is crucial because it reduces the acid in your mouth and cleans areas in and around your gums that are hard to brush. Also, it re-mineralizes your teeth and strengthens them against decay.

You can rinse with a mouthwash after brushing your teeth, and occasionally use it for fresh breath when brushing or flossing isn’t possible. However, remember to ask your dentist to recommend a great mouthwash to you since a particular brand may be a better option for your dental needs than another.
