There are two main areas of health: mental and physical. Underneath these overarching categories, there are many facets—one being eye health—which, unfortunately, gets overlooked sometimes. The truth is, if you want to take good care of your eyes, it goes beyond the basics (or a once-a-year checkup).

Here are a few tips and considerations to make as you try to improve all areas of health this year.

Tips For Taking Care Of Your Eyes:

Taking good care of your eye health includes the following:

  • Wearing the right glasses. The right glasses will ensure that your vision is optimal and that you are not straining your eyes. Straining can cause impaired vision or migraines. You can look into prescription glasses online or visit a local optician.
  • Eating a proper diet. What you eat can impact your eye health. Foods full of antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and omega-3s will help to improve and maintain good eye health.  A few foods that contain these nutrients include salmon, eggs, peppers, carrots and sunflower seeds.
  • Getting enough sleep. Plenty of sleep will ensure that your eye health is not affected. You will often strain your eyes or experience heavy lids if you lack sleep, which can impact your eye health over time.
  • Using eyedrops for low-lying lids if your vision is impaired or if you need to open your eyes more. Eyedrops can also help if you experience dry eyes.
  • Keeping your hands clean. Dirty hands could hinder your eye health. If you put bacteria or germs into your eye, it could cause an infection or scratch your eyes.
  • Avoiding bad habits (for example, smoking). Smoking and being around second-hand smoke can cause oxidative stress to your eyes. Avoid smoking at all costs to avoid hindering your eye health.
  • Using blue light lenses. Light from technological screens can damage your eyes and cause strain. Therefore, wearing blue light lenses will help to avoid eye strain and protect your eyes when using devices.
  • Wearing sunglasses. As well as protecting your eyes from the screens, it is important to protect your eyes from the sun. Therefore, always make sure to wear sunglasses when the sun is out or it feels bright outside.
  • Getting regular eye exams. An effective way to take good care of your eye health is by attending regular eye exams. This will involve an optician assessing your vision and the health of your eyes. Attending these exams can ensure that you wear the right glasses and understand any underlying eye conditions, which you may have otherwise not noticed you are dealing with. As soon as its time to attend an eye appointment, make sure you book in and see an optician to stay on top of your eye health.

Why Should You Take Good Care Of Your Eyes?

Taking good care of your eye health is important for many reasons:

  • To fight eye diseases. Anyone can be vulnerable to eye diseases with a lack of eye care. Avoiding cataracts or age-related macular degeneration can be avoided by eating and using the right antioxidants, such as vitamin C and zinc.
  • To be less vulnerable to an eye injury. The more care you give your eyes, the kinder they will be to you. It will help you be less vulnerable to an eye injury. For example, wearing protective goggles during sports or wearing the right glasses when reading can prevent the risk of injury and strain, which will ensure that you take the most care of your eyes during daily activities.
  • To notice signs of your eyes changing. When your vision changes, you will likely notice it quicker when you take good care of your eyes. Without the right glasses, you might not notice a sudden change in vision because you never experience optimal vision. The sooner you notice changes in your vision, the quicker you can act and improve your vision. This can help you avoid eye diseases, eye strain, and more.
  • To maintain a good vision throughout your life. The less care you take of your eyes, the more vulnerable you might be to poor vision or eye health in your later years. Hence, maintaining good eye care can help you maintain good vision throughout your life.

Overall, taking care of your eyes is important (but not complicated). Wearing the right glasses and attending your optician checkups can help you stay on top of your eye health and vision, and ensure that you avoid eye diseases.
